An open day for people opposed to building on the green belt around Bristol is being held at Whitchurch Community Centre on Sunday.

Whitchurch Green Belt Alliance, which is a member of the Save Our Green Spaces group, is hosting the event from 2pm-6pm.

The open day follows a public meeting at Bedminster Down School on Tuesday, when more than 130 people showed their opposition to a new town of 9,500 homes proposed for south Bristol.

In the next few months, North Somerset District and Bristol City councils will consider an outline planning application to build the town, called Ashton Park, in an area between the A38 at Dundry and the A370 Long Ashton bypass.

A swathe of green belt to the south of Whitchurch has also been identified as an area for development as part of an urban extension for Bristol in the Regional Spatial Strategy.

Tim Thorne, 49, of Rookery Way, Whitchurch, who runs Whitchurch Computer Centre in East Dundry Lane, said: "A shocking amount of building is proposed and will make Whitchurch lose its identity. We all use the green space continuously here and feel very passionate about saving it. On Sunday we want to better inform people about the plans and build a larger number of supporters for the cause."

Save Our Green Spaces was launched three years ago to campaign against development on green belt land across the South West.

Mr Thorne said the new houses would be so densely packed that they would be small out of necessity. The infrastructure would have to grow and he fears there would soon be no space between Bath and Bristol.

Already more than 600 homes and a hospital are being built in Hengrove Park, which separates Whitchurch from Knowle.

Everyone who attends the meeting on Sunday will have the opportunity to sign letters, which the group will then send to councillors and MPs.
