A Bristol man says he hopes a campaign of terror waged against him and his partner over a £10 loan will finally end following a court verdict.

Daniel Holly was attacked with a bottle near the Van Dyck Forum pub in Fishponds and left needing nine staples in the back of his head as well as 10 stitches to his back.

His attacker, Daniel Hatherall, was yesterday found guilty by a jury majority of 10 to 2 of assault causing grievous bodily harm.

The jury at Bristol Crown Court had heard that on December 28 last year, Hatherall attacked Mr Holly on Fishponds Road following a heated exchange in the pub.

Outside, Hatherall dragged Mr Holly into the road and, causing cars to stop, smashed the glass over his head and back.

Hatherall's fingerprints were found on shards of glass recovered from the scene, which had Mr Holly's blood on them.

The court heard Mr Holly, aged 26, had fallen out with some of his neighbours, who were friends of Hatherall.

Mr Holly told the Bristol Evening Post the attack was the culmination of six months of intimidation against him and his partner Keren, 35, by Hatherall.

He said: "It has affected our lives so much. It all started when Keren lent £10 to someone and when she asked for it back, Hatherall got involved and that was that.

"He would walk up to our house with vodka bottles and whisky bottles and hurl them at the house. The house was also pelted with eggs and small brown food bins and I had my car smashed up.

"He even came up to Morrison's in Fishponds once and when he realised we were in there, he picked up a cricket bat from the shelf and threatened us with it.

"Once, when Keren was pregnant, he walked right up to her outside the house and spat in her face. He was always trying to provoke me but it wasn't until a few days after Christmas that he finally attacked me.

"Keren is nervous anyway and this has made her much worse. There are shops just down the road but I can't even get her to go to those. She has had nightmares about the attack and found court very hard.

"He has put us through hell for the sake of £10 – it's just crazy.

"We just wanted a quiet life. Keren has lived in her home for 16 years but if we were able to move we would be gone tomorrow so that we would be able to start another life."

Discussing the attack, he added: "He made a bee-line for us as soon as he came into the pub and even waited outside the toilet when I went in. After we left I was walking and heard a glass smash in the road and suddenly he had me in the road and hit me with a bottle on my back and head until it smashed. The jagged edges cut through three layers of clothing, there was a lot of blood and I had to have staples and stitches."

Hatherall, 24, of Stapleton Road, was found not guilty of the more serious charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He had claimed that he acted in self-defence when he attacked Mr Holly but after four hours and 42 minutes, the jury found him guilty of the attack.

He was released on bail and will be sentenced next month.

    “nasty.
My advice would be to call the police whenever intimidation and vandalism occurs.
The police are yours to call to action whenever you get picked on by bullies.”

“That Hatherall guy sounds like a total k**b cheese.
I hope they put him away for a long time. Why do they realease people like that on bail?? Thats absolutely ridiculous. They should lock them in the police cell until the verdict is given if he is dangerous.”
