Caley's a golfing champ – at the age of eight
A new record has been set at Knowle Golf Club – by eight-year-old Caley McGinty.
At just under 4ft tall, Caley, who goes to St Annes Junior School and has been playing golf for only one year, sprung a surprise when she won the Junior Lucas Cup at the club last Sunday.
In the 36-hole final, Caley played 17-year-old Jack Trump, one of Gloucestershire's' top junior golfers and a regular in the county junior Under-18 team.
Jack plays off a handicap of three whereas Caley has a handicap of 43.
In the morning round, Jack hit seven birdies and played one of his best rounds to go in at the lunch break with a two-hole advantage.
After lunch, Caley lost the first to go three down. However, she steadied her game over the next few holes and had managed to bring the match to all square by the time they reached the halfway mark.
Jack was playing well but even though he managed an eagle two on the par 4 seventh, he just could not regain the lead from a determined Caley, who was putting with a maturity of touch that belied her tender age.
Caley won the match on the 17th by holing a tricky 10-foot putt for a six, to win 2 and 1.
This was a most amazing feat for an eight-year-old, who now holds the record for the youngest winner of a major junior club competition at Knowle GC.
The Junior Lucas Cup is probably the oldest Junior Closed Competition in Bristol, having been competed for every year since 1955.
Gordon Brand Junior is a notable previous winner of the cup.
