IN a remarkable period of just 24 hours a new chief constable was appointed for Avon and Somerset police, the first Muslim Lord Mayor of Bristol was announced and the manager of Bristol City was sacked.
The announcements began with the chief executive of the National Policing Improvement Agency Nick Gargan, 46, being named as the new chief constable of Avon and Somerset. He succeeds Colin Port, who has been chief constable for the past eight years and whose contract expires at the end of this month.
In a second announcement Labour councillor Faruk Choudhury is to become Bristol's first Muslim Lord Mayor.
The 38-year-old father-of-three from Hotwells, who represents Eastville, will take over from Councillor Peter Main in May. Mr Choudhury is a businessman and is planning to open a deli in Clifton.

And within the same dramatic 24 hours Bristol City's beleaguered boss Derek McInnes was sacked. The 42-year-old lost his job after watching his side crash 4-0 at home to Leicester.
Bristol City are now bottom of the Championship with just 22 points. The club is holding a press conference today about the managerial vacancy.
The former manager of Nottingham Forest, 55-year-old Sean O'Driscoll, and Harry Redknapp's coaching assistant at Queen's Park Rangers Steve Cotterill are among his possible successors.
