Busy year for cross-country in the West

The 2009-10 cross-country season is going to be a memorable one for West County athletics with three major events staged in Cornwall.

The first is the English Schools' Cross-Country Cup final, at Newquay Tretherras School, on Saturday, December 5, followed in the new year by the South West Schools' Cross- Country Championships at Truro School on Saturday, February 27.

Finally, Truro School will host the prestigious International Schools Cross-Country on Saturday March 27.

"It adds up to a great season for South West athletics," said John Knowles, who is on the organising committee for the events.

The organising committee is seeking financial support for both the South West and the international event and anyone who can help should email John Knowles at john.knowles1500@o2.co.uk.

● Pole vault coach Tim Snowdon has been appointed to the position of Avon network co-ordinator.

● Hogweed Trotters stage the second Muggles multi-terrain races next Saturday, October 17 from Hawkesbury Upton village hall.

● The South West Road Running Championships will be held on October 18 at Newton Abbot racecourse as part of the Dartmoor Vale half-marathon.

● Claire Hallissey warmed up for tomorrow's World Half-Marathon Championship with a runaway victory in the Cardiff 5K winter series, clocking 16mins 26secs.

● Bristol & West AC's Dougie Collins finished 37th (36:16) in the Churston Flyer five-mile road race in south Devon.

● Congratulations to Westbury Harriers' Tamsin Chick, who gave birth to baby Connor (6lb 9oz) last week.

● Former Bristol & West AC runner Maddy Clarke emerged from semi-retirement to underline her talent by finishing second overall and first vet in the Jersey Marathon in a time of 3hrs 02mins 50secs.

● Local clubs are reminded that the 50th running of the Mike Sully Cross- County races, including the British Milers' Club Championships and the Gemma Butler Bowl, will be held on the Bristol Downs on Sunday, November 22.

● Preparing for the Frankfurt marathon two weeks tomorrow, Bath international Holly Rush won the New Balance English half marathon, in Warrington, in a time of 75mins 08secs.
