Bus skids on ice into front garden
A resident in Shirehampton had a surprise on Wednesday morning when a bus ended up in a front garden.
The single decker Wessex Connect bus skidded on ice at a bend in St Mary's Road at 7.30am, mounted the pavement and hit a garden wall.
The three passengers were unhurt, but the driver of the bus has strained his back.
The bus was the 518 service from Emerson's Green to Avonmouth.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that there was black ice on the road and said the road had been blocked until the bus could be moved.
Residents reported hearing a loud bang when the bus collided with the wall, and said the road was "treacherous" because of the icy conditions.
A spokesman for Wessex Connect said the driver had more than 20 years of experience. He said: "The driver was going very slowly along St Mary's Road because of the conditions, but then slid totally out of control on the ice."

“well alison when was the last time you dove a vehicle that weighs over a ton it does not take a genious to work out the heavier the vehicle is the futher it will skid/slide i was on the bus behind as the lady driver was not informed not to go down that road we stopped at the bottom blocked by the poilce cars she kept remarkable control of her vehicel and diverting down a side street i was amazed at her driving skills but that does not in any way mean the previous driver was less skilled than she was just that they came accross the black ice first”

“Quote .. "A spokesman for Wessex Connect said the "The driver was going very slowly".
If he was going VERY SLOWLY he would not have caused the damage that it did. He would have been able to stop easily as some of the other traffic did at the time.”

“As U.K is surrounded by SALT WATER,is it not possible in 2009 to extract it from the sea by filtering ?.If so,stocks could be built up throughout the year.is this possible or is this too easy an idea.”

“Why doesn't everybody stop moaning and just learn how to drive...
If we drove SLOWER in bad weather or NOT AT ALL and WALKED - thus providing much needed excersice for our growing nation of FAT, LAZY & UNHEALTHY PEOPLE - and also stopped blaming others for our OWN PROBLEMS, then perhaps the world may be a little better off......”

“Normally, councils put bus routes as first priority when they start gritting.”

“Completely agree Lorraine! However, you have to look at these things objectively, yes every road should be gritted in these dangerous conditions, but at the same time, in all honesty how often does this happen here and how long does it really last, two, three days?? Sometimes I feel authorities can't win in situations like this. If they spent hudnreds of thousands of pounds on more gritting/ploughing etc (which is what it would cost), people would eventually moan that there isn't enough money for other things as well, which is what would have to happen. As I said previously, catch 22 for everyone involved, it's just a shame that our 'catch' is safety!!
Anon, it has been widely reported this winter and even last winter that the supply of salt has been running low but I have no idea where the salt actually comes from! I know of a few storage facilities in the South West where salt is stored, but as to where it comes from - who knows! All i know is, like most things we take from the ground - it's running low!”
