Burnham jetty work to start
Major works costing £80,000 will begin on Burnham-on-Sea's jetty next month.
Sedgemoor District Council will start the restoration work from September 7. It will replace a section of missing road surface, reset coping stones and repair flank walls.
Once complete the jetty will provide safe access to the water and return the historic structure to practical use.
The jetty works will be notified in detail to the Health and Safety Executive and the jetty and its immediate environment will be designated as a construction site.
Restrictions will be placed on jetty access during the work and there will be no public launching between Monday and Friday.
The upper portion of the jetty will be open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays.
The flood gates will be used to secure the top of the jetty during the working week and there will be strict controls on vehicles with the exception of the emergency services, such as the RNLI and BARB.
Sam Elliott, a spokesman for Sedgemoor District Council, said: "Effort will be made to ensure public safety. There will be a contractor's compound area formed immediately to the left of the jetty entrance for storage of plant and materials and there will be signage installed to define areas of work.
"A CCTV camera will be installed in the lifeguard station to record all activity in the construction period."
Contractor Boley and Skuse of Burnham hopes to complete the work by the end of October before Burnham Carnival and fireworks.
