Brookes leads his team to pro-am win at The Players Club
Mark Brookes enjoyed a home win in the team pro-am with members Andy Ferris (off 8), Nick Mason (19) and Rachel Priddle (17) on 13-under-par 131, before the West Region PGA Championship at The Players Club.
They finished one ahead of three groups. The ex-Bristol Rovers team, led by Welshman Adam Constable, claimed second on countback. The team featured former player and manager Harold Jarman (off 16), the club's community officer and former player Peter Aitken (6) and Dave Palmer (12).
The day was completed when West Region vice-chairman David Haines (Brean) displayed his trick golf show. It was to have been presented by former Players' director of golf Paul Barrington, but he pulled out with a back injury that also prevented him playing in the tournament.
Sam Hughes and his team from Saltford won a separate Texas Scramble competition on the par-three course.
Dorset's Ben Welch (Remedy Oak) shattered the course record with a seven-under-par 65 to win the individual event by two shots from Trevor Jones (Hambrook).
Chris Gill (Exeter) won the West Region PGA Championship by one shot from Cleeve Hill's Russ Berry, shooting two-under-par 142 (68 74). He also won the order of merit.
Jones carded 71 and 73 to take a share in a three-way tie for third, worth £497, and said: "I am playing well again and this is the form I need to produce if I am to retain my Welsh National Championship at Ashburnham next week."
Mark Sanders (Knowle) dropped shots in the brutal windy conditions near the end but shared sixth with eight others on 145.
