Britton's Bath City still have play-off hope
Bath City go into tomorrow's final game of the season still clinging to a play-off lifeline.
Currently eighth in the table, the Romans know that seventh position could be good enough to extend their campaign.
The play-offs are normally reserved for the teams finishing second to fifth, but second-placed Hampton and Richmond have still not received planning permission for the necessary ground improvements they need to be eligible for the Conference Premier. And Maidenehad United, who are sixth, have already been ruled out of the play-offs because their ground has been deemed unsuitable for promotion.
So if Hampton are also out of the equation, Bath must rise one place in the table tomorrow to be in with a chance of a return to the Conference Premier.
Adie Britton's side are level on points with Welling United but have an inferior goal difference. So, effectively, they have to achieve a better result at Thurrock than Welling do at home to Newport County.
Bath accept it is an outside chance and already they are planning for next season.
Britton will start putting his squad in place for the 2009-10 campaign in the next few days after agreeing a playing budget with the board.
"We have had some successful talks about next season's budget," said Britton. "I am looking to reach agreements with the current squad within the next week. We also need to sign three or four new players and I want to do that as soon as we can."
Two players who will definitely not be part of next season's squad are keeper Paul Evans, who is emigrating to Australia in September, and Scott Rogers, who is set to join Newport County.
"Scott has had a stop-start season because of injuries and feels like he has gone a bit stale," said Britton. "It's a shame because he is such a good player and a great lad to have around the dressing room. We'll miss him.
"Paul has been magnificent for us. Quite clearly, had it not been for his injuries, he would still be playing league football now. He will take an awful lot of replacing."
Striker Darren Edwards (knee) and winger Richard Evans (jaw) are the only absentees from tomorrow's game.
● Weston-super-Mare face a difficult final game of the season at Chelmsford City, who are bidding to grab the final play-off place.
Youth team goalkeeper Luke Purnell replaced Ryan Northmore for the 3-0 defeat by Welling but Northmore looks certain to return to the startling line-up.
Ashan Holgate should recover from the ankle injury which forced him to miss the Welling game but Alex Kite has been recalled by Bristol Rovers.
● Team Bath play their final game as a non-League side when they host Bishop's Stortford at Twerton Park tomorrow.
The university-based side have resigned from Conference South after being told they are not eligible for promotion as they are not a limited company. Prices have been cut to £2 for adults ,while Under-16s will be admitted free.
