A British Olympian who will be going for gold this summer took time out of her busy training schedule to inspire young athletes at two Yate schools this week.

Top hammer thrower Zoe Derham, popped into Wellesley Primary and Raysfield juniors much to the delight of the excited youngsters. The visits were organised by Merlin Housing Society who are sponsoring Zoe in her bid for Olympic glory.

Zoe showed off her commonwealth games medal, spoke about life as an athlete and challenged the children to pick up her hammer.

Zoe, who is a former Merlin resident, said "I had a great time. Being able to take some time out of a very busy training schedule to inspire local children has been fantastic. I hope they enjoy the rest of their Olympic celebrations and that I've helped spark their future athletic aspirations."

Everyone had a fantastic day and under Zoe's direction, we event managed to create human Olympic rings. The children will always remember this day!"

Depending on her training schedule, Zoe may also run an athletics workshop at the South Gloucestershire Festival of Sport next month.
