How can Bristolians save on their car insurance premiums?
Whiplash claims add £118 to every driver’s annual car insurance bill, new research has revealed. An increase in personal injury claims, especially whiplash, has caused premiums to rise by 80% since October 2008, according to Aviva.
Whiplash claims have witnessed a 32% increase since 2009. Personal injury claims have risen to 52% of the insurer’s total claims cost, up from 37% in 2005.
According to the investigation, the average current legal fee for a whiplash claim is £2,500, with intermediaries such as claims management companies and personal injury lawyers accounting for almost half of this cost.
Estimates show that £1.5bn would be slashed from UK motor insurance premiums if insurers handled claims directly.
The revelation comes in the wake of a major shake-up in the industry following a new EU gender ruling banning insurers from determining charges based on somebody’s gender.
Drivers of every age have seen their car insurance costs increase in recent years, with young female drivers bearing the brunt of the rises.
With this in mind, how can people in Bristol save money on their car insurance?
Some insurers offer discounts for Pass Plus qualified drivers, so it can be worth taking the Driving Standards Agency’s course.
Putting an older and more experienced driver on your policy can bring down your premium by a significant amount.
Vehicles with bigger engines are categorised as more high risk by insurers, so if getting a smaller vehicle is possible, it may be worth doing so to save on your policy.
