It wouldn't be Easter without the annual tradition of eggrolling in Bristol's steepest street.

People have been sending hard-boiled eggs down Vale Street in Totterdown on Easter Sunday for the last 14 years.

The sun shone yesterday as decorated eggs were rolled down what is said to be one of the steepest roads in Europe. Coffee and hot cross buns were handed out to the crowd that gathered at the top of the hill.

Charlotte Beedell, 49, of Orchard Road, Long Ashton, was among the first people to roll eggs when living in Vale Street when her children were young.

She said: "We thought it would be a nice idea for the children.

"It's often the first spring day and the first time everyone gets together after the winter.

"I am thinking about bringing it in where I live in Long Ashton."

Steph Stephens, 33, of Pyle Hill Crescent, went along with her sons, Leon, seven, and Sam, five, and one-year-old daughter Cyan.

She said: "It is good fun. This year the children have covered their eggs in Easter stickers.

Alice Hammond, nine won a chocolate Easter egg after her egg rolled further than any of the other competitors.

Her family were visiting from Essex, staying with Colin Harrison, 39, of Hawthorn Street.

He said: "I came last year after moving in and was a real welcome to the community."
