A new BMX track for Little Stoke could be open for youngsters to try their jumps and turns by the end of the year.

Local riders got involved in deciding what features were needed at the track, which will be built in Little Stoke Park and funded by Stoke Gifford Parish Council.

Now a planning application for the scheme has been submitted and parish leaders hope consent will be given so work can start on the project soon.

Parish clerk Neil Pirie said: "It does depend on how quickly South Gloucestershire Council determines the application and, as long as it is approved, the weather. But I would hope it could get done in October."

He said sub-soil would need to be brought onto the site by lorry in order to create the track, which will have a couple of turns and about 15 jumps.

Part of the track will be concreted, with some areas covered in asphalt and the rest consisting of compacted dust.

Adam Brazil, 18, of Silver Birch Close, is a former junior BMX champion and he worked with community development workers to come up with the best design for the track, which will be known as a pump or play track rather than a competition facility.

Adam, who competes in BMX competitions across the UK and Europe, was consulted about the best ways of maintaining the track once it is built.

Mr Pirie said the council had set aside £20,000 in its budget for the project, which will allow youngsters to hone their skills closer to home instead of having to travel to other tracks in neighbouring parishes.

He said: "The location chosen within the park is the furthest point from houses and no lighting is proposed. It won't affect walkers or sports players."
