Mamma Mia! The Movie, written by Bristol playwright Catherine Johnson, has become the biggest-selling DVD of all time in the UK.

In five weeks, the disc has sold more than five million copies, placing it in one in four UK households.

The Abba-themed movie, based on the musical Ms Johnson, who now lives in Leigh Woods, wrote when she was "penniless" in Hotwells, was also the top seller of 2008, beating The Dark Knight, with 1.5 million sales, into second place.

According to figures released by the Official Charts Company (OCC), Mamma Mia! tops the all-time list of sales since the DVD format was launched in 1998.

In second place is Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl, starring Johnny Depp, which has sold 4.7 million copies in the UK.

The accolade has rounded off an amazing year for Mamma Mia! The Movie, which had already been named as the fastest-selling DVD of 2008, shifting 1.7 million on its first day of sale.

In mid-December it was announced that the movie had overtaken Titanic to become the highest grossing film in the UK, with a turnover of more than £69 million.

The movie soundtrack has been confirmed as the biggest selling compilation of 2008, with a million copies flying off the shelves.

Last year, the original stage version also visited the city where it was conceived, performing in front of packed houses at the Bristol Hippodrome in a nine-week run.

OCC managing director Martin Talbot said: "Right from its release, Mamma Mia! has been a record breaker – when it was issued on DVD, it became the fastest seller of all time.

"This latest landmark further underlines the popularity of the movie, which is now officially the British public's favourite DVD of all time – with one-in-four British households owning a copy."

The biggest selling titles in the 10 years of DVD are otherwise dominated by action-adventure titles such as Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Lord Of The Rings, Casino Royale and Gladiator.
