Bristol woman celebrates 102nd birthday
When Phyllis Longhorn was born in Bristol in 1907, King Edward VII was on the throne and women did not have the right to vote.
She has seen some remarkable changes during her lifetime but is still fit and active at the age of 102.
Phyllis danced at her birthday party at Alder Court, Whitchurch, where she lives in a very sheltered Brunelcare flat.
Surrounded by 60 birthday cards, she spoke of her long life and how Bristol has changed over the years.
Phyllis was born in Whitehall, one of nine children, and left school at 14.
She worked at the Wills tobacco factory in Ashton but left to help raise her brothers and sisters.
She later returned to work as an auxiliary at Frenchay Hospital.
She said: "In those days you could stay out late without a worry and no one ever locked their doors – nobody had anything worth stealing."
At 29 she married her first husband, George Hulbert, but was widowed just four years later when he was killed in an accident.
Phyllis married again in her 50s but her second husband, Bert Longhorn, died after seven years
She used to go sequence dancing and swimming several times a week and in her youth she competed for the Bristol North swimming team.
Later she took up oil painting and sold several pieces.
These days she enjoys watching Coronation Street and Emmerdale, and spending time with her friend Bert Sheppard, 85, who also has a flat at Alder Court.
She said: "I'm very lucky as I have good health. I've only ever spent one night in hospital, to have a cataract removed."
Chris Denyer, manager of Alder Court, said: "Phyllis is my treasure – she's absolutely wonderful.
"I don't think I have ever known a lady of her age who is so sprightly."
