This is Bristol

Clifton is one of the city's wealthiest areas, containing many Bristol landmarks.

The area has some of Bristol's best tourist attractions: the zoo brings in visitors from around the South West and Brunel's Suspension Bridge is an icon of the city's engineering heritage.

There is also the strikingly modern Clifton Cathedral on Pembroke Road.

On a walk through Clifton's streets you will see grand terraces, plenty of expensive cars and, at many times of the year, lots of university students.

On-street parking in the area is a particular problem.

University term-time is particularly frustrating for residents who already have to cope with a daily influx of commuter cars.

The council is looking into introducing a residents' parking zone which could cover most of the ward, and would see residents having to pay for the right to park.

An area of Cliftonwood is one of two parts of the city which may be used to pilot the scheme and, if approved, could be in place at the end of the year.

Residents are split in their views on the scheme – with some opposing the costs of paying for a permit and others supporting it with the hope that it will drive out the commuters who park in the area.

The largely residential area includes three University of Bristol halls of residence, and many student-occupied houses, which can be a bone of contention for other residents, but do mean that out of term-time the area feels very calm and spacious.

It is a virtually all-white district, with only seven per cent of the population coming from ethnic backgrounds.

The ward includes Clifton Village – a leafy, pleasant and prestigious part of the city with good restaurants, classy bars and a range of shops.

Closer to Cumberland Basin, Hotwells lacks the upmarket reputation of Clifton but still retains a unique community feel, and recent urban renewal has revitalised this area of the city.

The number of jobs available in the ward is 5,100, which, considering it is a mainly residential area, is not far off city average of 6,560.

The only primary school in the area is Hotwells Primary School, although the private schools Clifton College and Clifton High School also include primary-level education.

Crime is at a level of about two thirds the citywide rate, and in a council survey only 12 per cent of people asked thought that anti-social behaviour was a problem.

These factors contribute to making Clifton a generally satisfied ward – with the survey showing that 90 per cent of people were happy and 81 per cent were satisfied with life.

Furthermore, 74 per cent said they believed they belonged to the neighbourhood and 85 per cent trusted people locally.

● Political forecast: Clifton residents are expected to vote Lib Dem again this election. Only one of the ward's two seats are up for election this year. Lib Dem councillors have comfortably held both for many years, winning one seat with 51 per cent of the vote two years ago.

“There is Christchurch and St John's primary too. Also, why blame the students for causing the parking problems -many of them don't have cars.”
