Bristol Zoo's head vet Sharon Redrobe spent 10 days at a gorilla and chimp orphanage in Cameroon.

Sharon visited Mefou National Park, an area of forest containing several large enclosures and home to around 17 young gorillas, 90 chimpanzees and 11 baboons.

She carried out health checks on the baboons, 10 infant Western lowland gorillas as well as numerous other animals and helped train staff on new medical equipment.

Among her patients was one-year-old female chimp Samboro, who is recovering from meningitis.

Sharon said: "It's great to have the opportunity to go out to Cameroon and be able to make such a big difference to the team out there.

"Opportunities like this are the reason I became a vet."

Mefou National Park is run by conservation charity the Cameroon Wildlife Aid Fund, which works to protect apes from the bushmeat trade.

Bristol Zoo regularly sends staff to the project.
