How Bristol could use a Brownsword-type figure right now

This is Bristol

Without wanting to turn my weekly article into something from The Financial Times, it is quite clear that all Guinness Premiership clubs are having to watch their pennies at the moment.

Bath's admission that they made a £357,000 loss last season is not great and it is another sign of the downturn in the economy.

Bath are fortunate that they have a wealthy owner in Andrew Brownsword, who is willing to make up the shortfall, but it shows that the club is not a viable business at the moment.

The main difference between Bath, who have this week announced losses of £357,000, and Bristol, who last week revealed how they were losing £1million a year and were in need of new investment, comes down to Brownsword.

And I desperately hope Bristol can find their Brownsword-type figure very soon.

On the field, the match which stands out for me locally this weekend is Bristol versus London Irish tomorrow.

Bristol got their first win of the season against Northampton recently, but then went up to Gloucester and simply did not perform.

London Irish are, like Gloucester, a class act but that is not to say Bristol cannot win this one.

Bristol would have been taking more than a keen interest in the Newcastle-Wasps match last night, and while Wasps have found themselves down the bottom of the table, you cannot believe they will become serious candidates for relegation.

So, just as Richard Hill said after the Gloucester match, it looks like being Bristol versus Newcastle to avoid the dreaded drop.

I can see Bristol winning tomorrow – and equally when I look at the Newcastle squad I think surely Bristol, with their spirit and everything else, can get enough wins to stay up.

Newcastle are a mess and I honestly cannot see where they are going to win enough games to survive.

Bath, meanwhile, are looking to stay on top of the Premiership and face a very difficult match at Harlequins tomorrow.

Bath have thrown away a couple of leads recently, but you can't play well in every game – and even if you, you can't play well for 80 minutes.

The standard of the Premiership is such now that sides will always have their pressure, but Bath have a winning culture now and this is another game they can win. But Quins will make it very tough for them.

Gloucester are at home to Northampton today – and I certainly don't think Northampton will be relegation candidates.

Even if they do not win at Kingsholm, which I cannot see them doing, they will win enough games at Franklin's Gardens to be safe.

Gloucester were very ruthless against Bristol last week and they have that swagger about them again.

As for England, New Zealand are a great side who have the potential to embarrass them even further this afternoon.

England look rudderless on and off the field at the moment, which is worrying for the new coaching set-up.
