Bristol transport experts appeal to Government for greater investment
FOUR professors from the University of the West of England – all experts on transport infrastructure – have signed an open letter from 32 UK transport academics to the Secretary of State for Transport, raising their shared concerns about the current state of transport policy and investment.
The hard hitting letter mirrors a similar collective appeal by transport experts a decade ago and calls for the Government to work collaboratively with the transport profession if ambitions for integrated transport are to be realised.

The letter, to Patrick McLoughlin MP, states: "Our cities are simply not equipped to take further growth in road traffic and the benefits of faster journey times on the strategic network risk being lost in greater congestion on local urban roads where the majority of journeys are undertaken."
Professor Glenn Lyons from UWE's Centre for Transport and Society said: "If we are to avoid the accumulation of long term problems in the face of short term challenges, our politicians must draw more strongly on the collective and longstanding wisdom available – the country's professors are ready to engage."

“These same polytechnic profs, in conjunction with Liberal councilors, have helped to create gridlock in Bristol so that they can 'cure' it by receiving funding for designing fanciful schemes in conjunction with congestion charges it will be win win for profs and liberal councilors lose lose for Bristol and surrounds”

“An overly expensive 'Cattle Class' transport system, that does not and can never take people where they want to be when they need to be there, is not a viable transport system. . It's just rationing travel.
Turn off the traffic lights and remove the road clutter, and people will get to where they need to be when they need to be there. . Life will go on.
Gordon Brown's money tree that was paying these professor's salaries has died.”

“Maybe they need all that money for HS2. It seems it's more important to get people into and out of London than to implement decent transport within cities and metropolitan areas.”

“The most amazing thing is that the DFT are telling the government the same thing. 10 years and we are all F***ed looking at their congestion stats;

Just got back from Copenhagen and they have sublime transport can get around quickly no congestion. We need to sort it or it is going to cost our economy dearly in the long run.”

“Experts on transport!!!!!?? . . Profs at the UWE??? . . That's like claiming you are an expert on child birth and poverty because you've been born into a poorer family.
Professors of what? . And where did they gain this expertise? . LABOUR CENTRAL OFFICE??”
