Bristol thief spared jail
A man who stole three handbags and used a stolen bank card to buy a Playstation and goods worth more than £500 has been spared jail.
Shaun Nash, 23, stole the handbags from A Davids and Son, a fruit selling firm on Western Drive, Hengrove, after staff had started a shift at 8pm on February 25.
They returned to the tea room at 10pm to find their bags had gone, and CCTV revealed images of two men in helmets arriving on a motorbike and entering the warehouse several times. They then left on the motorbike.
CCTV later that evening showed Nash, of Pevensey Walk, Knowle West, using a stolen Lloyds TSB card to buy a £20 Vodafone top-up from Tesco Express in Brislington and then using it to pay for a Playstation, games and a Playstation controller, also in Brislington.
Andrea Edwards, prosecuting said: "The victim, Miss Kqwal, called her bank to cancel her cards and was told that it had been used to withdraw £300 and to buy goods to the value of £517."
Nash, who admitted the offences, was given a 30-week suspended sentence with a 12-month supervision order and a drug rehabilitation requirement of six months at Bristol Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Tim Rose, defending, said Nash had complied with the requirements of the Criminal Justice Intervention Team; was trying to give up drugs and had a methadone prescription; had re-established contact with his son, and was now living at home with his mother – who claimed she would throw him out if he started taking drugs again.
