Bristol tennis hopeful Brigit Folland's superb run at the AEGON British Junior National Championships in Bournemouth has come to an end.

Folland, who trains at the local David Lloyd Tennis Centre, was the surprise package of the tournament, producing some of her best form to reach the semi-finals.

Competing in the 14-and-under Girls Singles at the West Hants Club, Folland thrashed No 7 seed Katie Millar 6-0, 6-2 in round one, and came from a set down to defeat third seed Beth Askew 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.

Folland, Avon's No 1 player in her age group, was unseeded going in to the tournament and her brave run was finally cut short in the semi-finals, when she was beaten by No 2 seed Eleanor Dean 6-4, 6-1.

Folland was full of praise for her opponent. She said: "That was a good experience. Eleanor is tough and strong so it is always going to be a challenge. She played really well.

"It's been a good week for me, but I still have to look back on it and see what I can improve on."

Folland said her ambition was to go even further next year.

"My next challenge is to come back and win this event. I will be in the 16 and unders next year," she said. "But even so my aim has to be to come back here and win."

Dominique Covington, from Colston's School, in Stapleton, also took part in the event, but fell to Dean in the last eight 6-3, 6-1, ending hopes of an all-Bristol semi-final clash.

Dean, from Wimbledon, went on to win the final, toppling Hertfordshire's Katy Dunne in three sets. Dunne is the top ranked singles player in the country at 14-and-under level, and was the No 1 seed in the competition.

Multi-talented Eleanor experienced more success in the doubles, as she and partner Katie Boulter defeated Alice Keddie and Askew, clinching the title on a match tie-break 10-5.
