Bristol teenagers play part in record set of GCSE results today
Bristol’s state schools continued the improving trend of recent years.
Several academies showed spectacular rises in results. The newest, Bristol Metropolitan Academy, which opened a year ago, saw 85 per cent of students gain at least five A*-C passes, compared with 42 per cent last year. The figure including English and maths was 39 per cent, up from 30.
Bristol Brunel Academy, also part of Cabot Learning Federation, had figures of 83 per cent and 45 per cent (up from 62 and 26).
At Oasis Academy Bristol in Hengrove, the results were 81 per cent and 28 per cent, compared with 70 and 22. Oasis Academy Brightstowe in Shirehampton was also expecting significantly higher figures than last year, as was Merchants’ Academy in Withywood.
Consistent high performers in recent years such as John Cabot Academy, Cotham School and St Mary Redcliffe and Temple, showed continuing improvements.
John Cabot figures were 96 per cent and 72 per cent and SMRT 87 and 70. Cotham was set to report record results.
Independent schools reported strong performances, with 100 per cent pass rates, Early results included Redland High School, where all students gained at least eight A*-C grades, and more than a quarter of candidates achieved all their passes at A* or A.
Badminton School saw 87 per cent gaining all A*s and As and 57 per cent of students achieving all A*s. At QEH boys’ school, 68 per cent of all GCSE grades were at A* or A while 24 boys – 30 per cent of the year group – achieved straight A*s or As.

“Well done to the pupils involved for their hard work. However exams where most people pass are worthless. If so many get top marks, then how to employers differentiate the truly exceptional students from the average?”

“Mr Payne. No one is interested in your daughter. This is a newspaper. If you want a self congratulatory rag, print your own.”

“Ms Payne got a B?? what a let down. How embarrassing for the girl to have her dad bragging about her - plenty of others beat her marks - and from state schools too!!”

“Daniel Payne. I'm sure you daughter is wonderfully talented but then so are many others who's fathers are not on here boasting about it. and quite frankly, I'm far more impressed by my friends son who has just gained GCSE music grade A at the age of 13 (he took the exams when he was only 12) and guess which school he goes to? HENBURY!!! A private education is no substitute for talent! and before you moan Mr Payne my children also attend a private school”

“I would like to give my daughter, Shellby Payne from Redmaids school a mention. She was the only student to acieve an A* 1GCSE Maths, together with 9 A* passes, also a 1A,1B and a 100% English Lit result. We would like to say that we are so proud of what she has achieved and that all of her hard work has paid off. It would be fantastic if she was able to get a mention in your paper”

“my daughter Shellby Payne from Redmaids School in Bristol has had a fantastic set of results today. She was the only student in Redmaids to achieve an A* in 1GCSE Maths together with 9 x A*'s , 1A, 1B and 100% English Lit. It would be amazing and make us so proud if she could get a mention in your paper for all of her hard work over the past years.”

“paul- the 5 A*-C rate has gone up fairly linearly since the 80's,,, and it wasn't labour's fault.
look at the underlying cause.”
