A 16-year-old has died after an accident at a pupil referral unit in Bristol.

The teenager suffered a serious head injury after what is believed to be a fall at The Park Centre in Daventry Road, Knowle West.

The teenager's name has not been released but his first name is known to be Jack.

He attended the centre's pupil referral unit, which helps youngsters who have problems at mainstream schools.

The unit is run by the city council's education department. A rapid response vehicle from the Great Western Ambulance Service was called to the unit, on the site of the former Merrywood School, at lunchtime yesterday.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said the teenager was in cardiac arrest when the paramedic arrived.

Emergency treatment was carried out at the scene.

An ambulance turned up a few minutes later and rushed the teenager to the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

The spokeswoman said the ambulance crew also carried out emergency treatment and alerted the hospital so a team of medics could treat the teenager on arrival.

He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

An investigation into the death has been launched.

Annie Hudson, strategic director for the council's Young People's and Skills department said: "This is a tragic situation and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

"A full investigation into the circumstances is underway."
