Bristol teacher suspended for lying about sacking
A maths teacher has been suspended from the profession for 18 months after lying in a job application to a Bristol school.
Mohamed Nagib Abd El Ghafa did not tell the head of the former Hengrove Community Arts College he had been sacked from his previous job in Somerset.
He was taken to a disciplinary hearing at the General Teaching Council (GTC), which ruled he had deliberately withheld the information.
The GTC said Mr Ghafar had brought the profession into serious disrepute and was guilty of unacceptable professional conduct.
"Mr Ghafar has not demonstrated any insight into his failings and there has been no expression of regret or apology," the GTC said.
It decided to suspend Mr Ghafar from teaching for 18 months. He has a right of appeal to the High Court.
Meanwhile, a former teacher at Henbury School has also been found guilty by the GTC of unacceptable professional misconduct after failing to inform the head about a conviction in 2003 for making false benefit claims, for which she had been given a conditional discharge.
Jacqueline Philippa Booth has been made the subject of a conditional registration order, meaning if she applies for a teaching post she must inform the head about the order and past conviction.
