Bristol sweet-seller guilty of groping schoolgirl
A Bristol market trader who ran a sweet shop from his Lawrence Weston home has been found guilty of groping a schoolgirl customer.
A jury at Bristol crown court was told Michael Johnstone kissed and improperly touched the 14-year-old when she visited his cupboard store to spend £1.
Johnstone, 59, who traded from Kneller Close, denied sexual assault but a jury found him guilty by a majority of eleven to one.
Judge Simon Darwall-Smith adjourned the case for sentence, pending a report, until December 11.
The jury watched a video of an interview the girl gave to police in which she told them she wanted the matter "sorted out" to stop it happening to others.
She described going to Johnstone's house because his sweets were cheap.
She said: "He opened the cupboard and I was starting to pick my sweets when he kissed me on my neck and I tried to ignore him."
It was then, she said, that Johnstone put his hand under her top.
He then kissed her on her lips and tried to "snog her" she said.
The youngster told how she paid Johnstone the £1 and walked away, conscious that she would be on security camera and not wanting to appear to be panicking.
After confiding to a friend and then her mother, her mother asked if she wanted to call police and she did and Johnstone was investigated.
