Sixty prize turkeys are being lavished with care by an organic supermarket as the clock ticks down to Christmas.

The St Werburghs-based Better Food Company has a flock of prize bronze turkeys in Chew Magna, next door to their fields of organic parsnips, carrots, potatoes, sprouts and greens.

In the run-up to December 25, customers can find out how many have made the journey from country coop to Christmas cooker with a countdown billboard outside the store.

And 60 Bristol families will have the privilege of tucking into a Christmas dinner that's travelled just 10 miles from plot to plate.

Better Food Company managing director Phil Haughton, said: "People who want a truly ethical Christmas with a very low carbon footprint can be assured by our food.

"We have 60 turkeys and I check on them two or three times a day, feeding them lovely organic produce from next door.

"It's great to know when you buy one that it's had a happy, healthy, free range life; not intensively reared, tightly packed and deep-frozen."
