Three secondary schools in Bristol have launched their own student parliament.

Youngsters from the Cabot Learning Federation schools – John Cabot Academy, Bristol Brunel Academy and Bristol Metropolitan Academy – will work with staff on topics such as curriculum and cross academy projects.

The parliament comprises about 25 pupils from Year 7 to sixth form.

One of its first projects will look at how communities, families and schools can help young people stay safe.

The parliament will produce some ideas and proposals which will be presented back to Bristol Children's Safeguarding Board.

Teacher Tony Searle said: "It is imperative that the Federation Parliament work together on projects that can make a real difference to their education."

Annie Hudson, Bristol's strategic director for children, said: "I am looking forward to working with the Cabot Learning Federation Student Parliament as this project will generate many useful ideas that will help children and young people stay safe. Importantly too, it will strengthen the voice of young people in the city's children's services. The Federation is to be congratulated on taking this initiative to encourage young people's engagement with participation in issues affecting them and their communities."
