More than 250 students filed into Bristol Cathedral to receive higher-level qualifications after years of study.

They were joined by proud relatives and friends at the City of Bristol College event, which was also attended by representatives of employers who have given support to those on foundation degree programmes.

A total of 1,200 people were inside the cathedral during morning and afternoon sessions for the Higher Education Awards day to mark the achievements of students. Among qualifications gained were BA and BSc (Hons) degrees, NVQs, diplomas, foundation degrees, certificates and post graduate certificates in education.

The keynote address was delivered by guest speaker Brendan Barber, General Secretary of the Trade Union Council and a non-executive director of the Court of the Bank of England.

Principal of City of Bristol College, Keith Elliott, said: "The awards ceremony is an important event that recognises the achievements of our students and we are delighted to help celebrate their success.

"The college now delivers higher education to almost 2,000 students and is making a significant contribution to the development of the higher skills required for economic recovery in the region.

"The College is very proud of each student and on behalf of all the staff, I'd like to congratulate them and wish them every success in their future careers."
