Bristol sixth-form student Andrew Hammond has won gold and silver medals at the Welsh Indoor Rowing International Championships.

Andrew, 17, who goes to St Brendan's Sixth Form College in Brislington, won the junior U18 lightweight men's class 2,000 metres in at 6 minutes 49.2 seconds at the championships in Cardiff.

He won a silver medal in the 500 metres, which was open to all ages and weight classes.

Andrew, from Paulton, is a member of the Minerva Rowing Club in Bath. He has a personal trainer, Adam Lancaster, who helps him juggle his A-level studies, part time work and training. Andrew, who has been rowing since 2001, hopes to secure a place at Southampton University, where he aims to continue his rowing career.
