Bristol student's bid to build Uganda village well
A Whitchurch student working in Uganda is hoping to raise enough money to help build a well to provide a long-term clean water supply to a small village.
Joshua Turnbull, who studied A-levels at St Brendan's Sixth Form College, and will be going to Loughborough University at the end of September to study history and politics, is working for the Lucia Youth Development Foundation.
But when Mr Turnbull and another volunteer, Katherine Payne, saw the lengths people in a small village had to go to in order to access clean water, they decided to raise funds to build a well. They need £4,570 for the water supply in the parish of Banda in the Wakiso district.
The village's only water supply at the moment is a stagnant spring. They desperately need sustainable clean water for the whole community, whose budgets are stretched to their limits.
Just a few days after contacting friends about their plight, they have already raised £532.
Mr Turnbull, who has an older brother who is 22, left the UK at the end of July, and is spending nearly two months helping locals with a range of physical tasks.
In Banda, he works with the women's group teaching them to make candles and baskets, and he is also involved in building chicken coops for their livestock.
In Nansana, Mr Turnbull is also involved in a basketball project for the youth of the area.

“I spoke to Josh last week and he said "It's hard, despite all the images presented to us by such organisations as Comic Relief and Wateraid, to prepare oneself for the immediate spectacle of an entire school of primary children collecting this insidious water with the intention of drinking it."
To donate funds to help Josh build a well in Banda, go to www.justgiving.com/buildawellforbanda.
If you donate online you will get an email receipt, which you must forward to Josh at josh.turnbull@yahoo.com so that the charity can forward the money to this project.
Thank you”
