A University of the West of England student who was caught with a kilo of cannabis in Bristol has been jailed for eight months.

Benjamin Curtis bulk-bought the drugs, worth more than £4,000 on the street, for himself and his university friends to last them through the summer holidays last year.

However, the 23-year-old, of Arley Hill, Bristol, was caught with the stash when police stopped a car he was travelling in.

He admitted a charge of possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

Mark Hollier, prosecuting at Bristol Crown Court, told how Curtis, a third year economics student at UWE, was arrested on the evening of July 1 last year.

He said police officers saw a Citroen ZX car travelling the wrong way around a roundabout in Winterstoke Road and turned on their blue lights.

Mr Hollier said: "The vehicle didn't stop right away. The rear passenger tried to get out of the car while it was going at 15mph. He didn't. It stopped. Curtis got out of the car holding a rucksack. Inside was a carrier bag and inside that was a kilo of cannabis."
