Bristol student debaters win at first attempt
Two students from Bristol Brunel Academy achieved debating success at their first attempt.
Stephen Summerhayes and Claire Rammelkamp represented the Speedwell school in the first round of the English Speaking Union's Schools' Mace.
The competition has been running for more than 50 years and is entered by 600 schools annually.
The BBA students spoke against the motion 'this House would make voting compulsory'.
They defeated Prior Park, St Gregory's Catholic College and The Home Education Learning Place after impressing a panel of judges including Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy.
They will now go through to the regional final in March.
Teacher Geoff Pugh said: "I am extremely proud of Stephen's and Claire's efforts. They have been tremendous ambassadors for Bristol Brunel Academy."
