Firefighters were called to a number of incidents in the Bristol area during Saturday night's high winds.

In Golden Valley Road, Bitton, they removed a fallen tree from the road and another tree had to be taken off a road at Clutton.

Just after 7pm firefighters were called to West Town Lane, at the junction with Bath Road, Brislington, to make safe a bill board that had come loose. And firefighters secured masonry on a house in Coronation Road, Bedminster, after some of it worked loose in the storm.

Gusts of up to 61mph were recorded in Filton. An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said its switchboard was deluged with calls between 6pm and 8pm on Saturday. Nearly 100 homes in Burnham-on-Sea were left without power for several hours after an electricity sub-station failed.

Train services between London and the South West were delayed yesterday morning after a trampoline was blown onto the line near Bath.

But the Bristol area looks set to miss out on heavy snow, which was predicted to fall early this week.

Instead, the area is set for more wind and rain over the coming days.

Meteogroup forecaster, Julian Mayes, said there may be light snowfall tonight or tomorrow night, but the chance of heavy snow was unlikely. He said: "There may be one or two clusters of showers tonight or on Tuesday night and people could see some snow falling, but we're not looking at lasting snow."
