Jewellery worn by Bristol film star Deborah Kerr is being auctioned in London early next month.

The sale at Bonhams in Bond Street includes items she wore at the height of her fame during the Forties and Fifties.

These include her diamond three-stone engagement ring from her first marriage to Squadron Leader Anthony Charles Bartley.

It dates from about 1945, the year they married, and comprises three brilliant-cut diamonds of yellow tint, and is expected to fetch £20,000-£25,000.

A mid-19th century gold and turquoise long snake-like chain, which she often used to wear around her wrist is expected to fetch between £2,000 and £2,500.

Kerr grew up in Weston-super-Mare and was educated in Bristol.

She made her first stage appearance in the city in 1937 and never looked back, going on to become a Hollywood screen legend.

The actress was born in 1921 in Scotland but her links with Bristol and Weston were strong.

She was a pupil at Northumberland House boarding school in Westbury Park, near the Clifton Downs, and went to a drama school run by her aunt in Durdham Park.

At the age of 15 she was chosen as a story reader for the BBC's Children's Hour, which was produced in Bristol.
