Two sixth-formers from Merchants' Academy in Withywood were inspired to raise money for Breast Cancer Care after seeing relatives battle the disease.

Cher Dyer and Jade Rees, both 16, organised a Pink Friday, in which students and staff members wore pink clothing and pink cup cakes were on sale.

Pink ribbon pin badges were on sale across the academy

for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The girls also gave presentations in assemblies to inform their fellow students about the disease and its treatment.

Jade said: "I'm really pleased that me and Cher are able to raise money for Breast Cancer Care, as it's something that means a lot to both of us. My Nan was diagnosed with breast cancer not long ago and is undergoing her second course of chemotherapy. I was really scared when I first found out, but she's been so strong, that I wanted to do something positive about it. She's really proud of what we're doing."

Cher said: "The academy has been really supportive of Pink Friday, especially the teachers, who have been donating prizes for the raffle and giving us lots of good ideas to help us raise more money. Both my mum and my Nan have been through breast cancer, and I really wanted other people to understand more about it. Me and Jade have learned so much since we've been through it, and I don't think enough people really understand the disease."

Polly Higgins, academy director of post 16, said: "All of us at Merchants' Academy are very proud of the initiative and enthusiasm that Jade and Cher have shown in setting up this Pink Friday event.

"We encourage our students to get involved in fundraising initiatives. All sixth form students study the entitlement curriculum, which includes citizenship modules, where they can undertake volunteering opportunities and responsibilities in relation to the community."

Both girls started in the academy sixth form this September, and are studying Btec health and social care and music.
