Bristol sidecar duo climb to second
British sidecar trial champions Jon Tuck and Matt Sparks are up to second place in the current series, a single point behind Robin and Sam Luscombe, after winning the Camborne-Redruth club's round at Newlyn East in Cornwall on Sunday.
The Bristol crew lost 18 marks fewer than their Yorkshire-based rivals
Plymouth speedway skipper Seemond Stephens and his passenger Gary Davey caused a major upset. Being the only contestants in the intermediate class, they elected to compete on the championship class route, and they finished third overall, just four marks behind the Luscombes.
Tuck and Sparks got off to a good start by competing the first eight sections at Cargoll Woods and Metha Woods without losing a mark.
The Luscombes lost three and Kevin Nolan and Darryl Dale were on four, but with two stops in Metha, Stephens and Davey were 14 marks in the red.
Fourteen sections awaited the two dozen crews at Shepherds Farm where Tuck was best with a loss of six. Stephens was next in line with 15, followed by Nolan on 20 and Luscombe on 21.
However, the latter pulled three marks back on Tuck at St Allen, and they reduced their deficit by a further two marks at Chyverton Farm, where the second section penalised the entire entry.
Stephens was best at the final group, Tinkers Castle, with an overall lost of seven. Tuck had two stops and two single mark debits that cost him a dozen marks, but the Luscombes lost four more as did Nolan and Dale.
Local crew Gareth Andrew and Keith Morcom, from Lanner, won the Clubman's Class by three marks from Allan and Rose Haigh, with Bristol crews Phil Sparks and Roger Tuck and Dave Tuck and Steve Chandler third and fourth respectively.
Belgian Marc de Reuver and Britain's Shaun Simpson were overall winners of the MX One and MX Two classes in the Salop Club's International Motocross at Hawkstone Park, near Shrewsbury the same day.
De Reuver won the first open class race from fellow Belgian Kevin Strijbos and British champion Bill Mackenzie, but he could not find a way round Ken de Dycher and Strijbos in a closely fought second race.
Marshfield's Tom Church was seventh in the first race, ninth in the second and sixth overall.
Simpson won both 250cc races from Portugal's Rui Congalves, and on this showing he will be a major contender for the world title this year.
