A brother and sister from Bristol are to play netball for England in South Africa after raising most of the funds for the trip themselves.

Chris and Rebecca Green, from Stockwood, will play in the World International Netball Association Tri-nations Indoor Series against Australia and the hosts later this month.

Chris, 20, has been chosen for the England men's team while Rebecca, 24, will play for the mixed team, which has three men and four women on court at any one time.

Chris, whose other main sport is American Football, played netball for England in the World Cup in Australia two years ago.

"I have been involved since I was at school. My mum used to coach us both," he said.

"Men's netball is not a massive thing but they are trying to make it a lot bigger.

"We have got a much, much stronger team this time and we are confident of doing well."

The Greens have had to try to raise £1,800 each for the trip while Chris has been training to become a plumber and Rebecca has been working as a PE teacher at Colston's School.

"We have done a lot of fundraising, selling raffle tickets and we have approached a lot of companies for help, but we have had to fund a lot of it ourselves," said Chris.

National Express has been one company to help out, providing bus travel to the airport for the flight to Rustenburg. The pair fly out tomorrow.

The series, being staged in Sun City, starts this Friday and runs until March 21.

Four England teams are taking part; ladies, mixed, men and under-21s.
