A fire in Bristol sent thick acrid black smoke billowing across the M32 last night.

Flames were spotted soon after 6pm in the scrapyard of Sims Metal on Gatton Road, St Werburgh's, where a number of scrap cars and a bin containing tyres had caught light.

Police closed off Gatton Road and Saxon Road, as onlookers gathered to watch the blaze from the nearby pedestrian footbridge over the M32 and from Fox Road in Easton on the other side of the motorway.

Nobody was thought to be in the yard when the fire started and the cause of the blaze was being investigated last night.

Four fire engines attended the fire from the Temple and Speedwell stations, including one with a turntable ladder. As the sun set, crews lit up the scene with bright spotlights.

Onlookers took photographs and filmed videos of the fire, which could be seen from the city centre. Cars also slowed on the motorway as the smoke billowed overhead.

Smoke and flames could clearly be seen coming from the yard, situated between the motorway and railway line, near Saxon Road's junction with Warminster Road.

Claire Brown, 38, a secretary from St Mark's Road, Easton, was taking photographs from Fox Road opposite the blaze. She said: "The smoke was really black and there was a strong smell of petrol at first."

Watching from the footbridge was 18-year-old mechanic Pete Morgan from Whitehall Avenue, St George. He said: "I saw all the smoke from my car and wanted to come and see what was happening as it looked quite serious. I thought it might have been Ikea or something."

“Ian...I wasn't moaning about it, simply implying that the length of time it took to tackle the fire indicated the size and severity of it. The slow to respond bit I was also mentioning because Bristol get's pretty congested and they were unable to come much faster because everyone was slowing down to look at it. I maybe should have made that more clear...

you don't even live here...how come you have so much to say about it?

I am sick of the fires at the scrapyard...they are dangerous and toxic and fairly frequent. I would dearly like to see the place shut down.”

“I live just behind the scrap yard in Saxon Road and if the wind is in the wrong direction it can be quite frightening when these frequent fires start. It makes one wonder - is there a benefit to anyone that these fires frequently reoccur? The costs must be enormous to the city. The yard sends filthy greasy dust into the atmoshpere and also starts up way before it is light! It should go go go.”

“So everyone wanted to know yesterday what was going on.

Where would you look, the local newspaper site.

They dont bother to update news for a further 13 hours.

    how parochial...

What happens when aliens invade? Oh! It's a sunday there's no one in the office to update the news for this "world cup" city...”

“Went past this yesterday, by the time I got back up to Fishponds you could see smoke all the way up on the high street.

don't they have CCTV at this place? No suggestions on whether it was accidental or arson or kids messing around?!”

“this is apparently the fourth fire, yet I know there's been more in the 12 years I've lived behind this scrapyard. I want to know when this yard will be closed down...it's too close to residential areas and the problems created by fires and traffic worry me as a local resident. the thick black smoke belched out over the train line and the M32. the police and fire dept seemed quite slow to respond and it took well over an hour for the fire to be put out. I am very concerned about the potential dangers future fires can cause. There are often young kids mucking about in the yard, it seems to me only a matter of time before something really serious happens. there doesn't seem to be any security on the site.

do scrapyards really just catch fire on their own? if so...why isn't there a better early warning system and 24 hr security.

the yard has been a concern for some time...it's about time someone did something about it.”
