Two Bristol schools have won national awards for the way they teach reading.

Victoria Park Infants, Bedminster, and St Barnabas CE School, Montpelier, were two of 16 prizewinners selected from 19,000 primary schools to be honoured by the Every Child a Chance trust.

Victoria Park pioneered the Every Child a Reader project, in which children who are struggling to learn to read get intensive one-to-one lessons.

It has won praise for its work from the city council and across the country.

St Barnabas received its award for the way it works with trained reading partners from the business community.

Bristol's cabinet councillor for schools, Peter Hammond, said: "I'm delighted two Bristol schools have been nationally recognised for the exciting and innovative work they've done to get children off to a strong start and keep them enthusiastic about reading.

"We have 39 schools taking part in the Every Child a Reader scheme this year, which in the long term will help drive up standards in English."
