Children at St Mary Redcliffe Church of England VC Primary School are celebrating the award of £4,000 to transform their outdoor environment.

The school plans to turn an unused, overgrown garden into an allotment with raised beds for each class to grow its own fruit and vegetables.

The playground makeover comes as part of the Supergrounds programme run by the Royal Bank of Scotland and managed by the national school grounds charity Learning through Landscapes.

Parent Adam Darke, who works for RBS, nominated the Windmill Hill school for the award.

He said: "As a parent I know how difficult it is for schools to raise funds and this scheme is an ideal way for us to improve the school grounds to help the children develop."

Head teacher Emma Payne said children, parents and carers were enthusiastic about the project and the school's governors had supported it by funding a new fence and gate.

Volunteers from RBS have cleared the site and pupils have held their first workshop with project adviser Nick Stonex in which they measured the site and drew what they would like to be created.
