Bristol's rugby reputation gets a boost from St Brendan's Old Boys
The future of rugby in Bristol is looking good – thanks to a squad of youngsters who finished the season with a haul of silverware.
The Under-10 boys from St Brendan's Old Boys RFC are putting the shine back on the region's somewhat tarnished rugby reputation at a time when Bristol kiss goodbye to the Premiership and Gloucester nurse their wounds after a 50-12 drubbing by Cardiff in the EDF Energy Cup final at Twickenham.
The young SBOB team has just won the Thornbury tournament in convincing style, with four straight victories in which only one try was conceded.
Collecting trophies has become something of a habit for the Bristol lads, who train every Sunday at the university sports ground at Coombe Dingle. In recent weeks the same squad also won the St Mary's rugby festival and SBOB's own Peter Pullin tournament.
Under-10s head coach Tony Rigg said it has been a fantastic season: "We have a great bunch of lads and dedicated coaches. The boys have worked tremendously hard, showing real determination and beating some very good sides along the way.
"To win three tournament trophies in succession is a wonderful achievement. The whole squad has trained hard and, most importantly, really enjoyed their rugby.
"Seasons like this are great for the players, but also really satisfying for the coaches. It's a great end to a magnificent season."
The results are a part of a real turnaround in the fortunes of the club.
The Under-9s also won their age group in the Thornbury and Peter Pullin tournaments, while at senior level SBOB's have just been promoted.
This year is the club's 80th anniversary, and chairman Chris Groves, who has been through thick and thin with the club, said: "It's great to see the club thriving again at both junior and senior levels."
