This is Bristol

Bristol's political landscape was suddenly and unexpectedly transformed on Tuesday night when the Liberal Democrats took control from Labour.

Or was it? Will Bristolians – the majority of whom don't even vote in local elections – really be able to tell the difference?

Now, the Post throws down a challenge to our new city cabinet members, who overnight have become the eight most powerful people in the city. We challenge them to make a difference.

Political stagnation has helped to beset Bristol with problems which have plagued us for more years than we care to remember. This city is crying out for strong leadership, political courage and decisive policies.

-Transport: Issues like residents' parking zones, the south Bristol ring road, traffic congestion and a better public transport system must be addressed.

- Education: Issues like the future of our primary schools and the drive for better exam results and opportunities for our young people must be addressed.

- Social services: The issue of better care for more elderly people in their own and council-run homes must be addressed.

- Housing: The need for thousands of affordable new homes must be addressed.

- Waste: The issue of finding a long-term way of dealing with our waste which is safe, efficient and has the public's support must be addressed.

Today, our message to the city's new Gang of Eight is simple – don't be the usual political suspects, prove to the people of Bristol that this change of power will make a difference.
