This is Bristol

A life-long friend came all the way to Bristol from Derbyshire so that we could attend Nature's Great Events together.

I'm sorry to say it was a big disappointment.

My friend and I were first introduced to the Colston Hall in the 1950s by our wonderfully inspiring music teacher, Karenza Baker, when she took some of her children to the classical concerts held there.

Then, by the 1960s we were going to see The Beatles, Roy Orbison, Little Richard to name but a few.

We have also, more latterly been to see Acker Bilk and Billy Connolly.

We also regularly attend the Remembrance Service each November. Each and every experience a good and memorable one.

We found the entire experience on the night of Tuesday, September 22, a most distressing and uncomfortable one.

Why oh why was the money not spent on the hall? Who cares about the glitzy meet and greet foyer.

We noted the new seats, cheap and cheerful and extremely uncomfortable. We were up in the balcony, the hall was packed with people.

The heat was totally unbearable, it was more like the Amazon rainforest, so I'm sure David Attenborough felt very at home.

I also happened to glance behind me, noticing that the emergency exit had been blocked off.

I dread to think what would actually happen should it be necessary to make a quick exit.

About 10 minutes into the show an elderly lady tried to get down the very steep steps, obviously overcome by the heat, she stumbled and fell.

Not one St John Ambulance person came to her aid. The steep stairs in the balcony should have hand-rails and be lit.We also took twice as long to get in and out.

So, £20 million has been spent and the hall itself is a health and safety issue and surely air-conditioning should have been a priority, we are living in the 21st century now.

We are two Grumpy Old women and will be boycotting the Colston Hall until something is done to improve standards.
