The Mandrake, Bristol's longest-running nightclub, is getting a revamp after being taken over.

The nightclub, in Frogmore Street, which opened in the early 1960s, has been renamed Basement 45.

Brothers Mark and Ben Davis, with partner Steph Mylonas, bought it on a long lease for an undisclosed sum. It was advertised for sale by property agents Christie and Co for £295,000.

The previous owners, Richard Godfrey and Richard Potts, owned the club for 12 years before retiring.

Mark, 31, who used to work at the Lakota club, Ben, 34, a former bank manager, and student Steph, 24, saw the opportunity to modernise the nightspot.

Mark said: "It's a very exciting opportunity and it is going to be completely different and musically diverse to how it was operating as the Mandrake.

"There's going to be more dance music which will involve mostly Bristol-based promoters like BlowPop, Just Jack and Empathy.

"The weekends will be dance-orientated with house, electro, break beat, techno and dub step.

"Midweek will be concentrating on mainly student nights and other events."

"It currently has a dated appearance but we will be up updating the fixtures and fittings, particularly the toilets."

"The updating includes the bars, DJ booths, dance floors, seating and entrance way."

The premises were originally used as cellars and basements for the historic townhouses in Unity Street.

Mark and Ben also own and run the Bijou club in Whiteladies Road which has been open for 18 months and runs a similar type of music scene.

The brothers said Basement 45 would allow then to put on much larger events and would open until 4am. The club is due to reopen on February 27.

“I wonder why nobody has looked at taking on The Rummer with a good basement club and large bar area. Any reason?”
