A wrestler from Bristol has set his sights on London 2012 following a recent haul of gold medals.

Leon Rattigan followed up his 2008 British Wrestler of the Year title with wins in Nice and Barcelona, before jetting out to Poland with the Great Britain wrestling team.

He will now compete in the Golden Grand Prix tournament in Russia this month, as he prepares for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and then the London Olympics.

Rattigan, 21, who competes in the 96kg category, now trains in Manchester with the GB team, but grew up in Barton Hill, where he was coached by the late Amir Esmaeli.

His mother, Lesley Salmon, said: "To get three golds like he did is brilliant and he was the only British wrestler to get into the top three in Nice.

"It is going to be harder in Russia though.

"With the Olympics over here in three years, they have been looking for people with talent and they really look after them up in Manchester.

"If it wasn't for Amir, Leon wouldn't be where he is today.

"When he was 11, I took Leon down to the gym with me and Amir said that he would make a good wrestler. That's how it all started."
