Work has started on the first new cycle route to be built in South Gloucestershire as part of the Cycling City project.

The route links Frenchay Hospital with the University of the West of England along Filton Road, and eventually will be extended to Downend and Staple Hill.

Under the scheme, existing cycle facilities will be upgraded, including widening sections of pavements so pedestrians and cyclists can share them. Advisory and mandatory cycle lanes in the road and improved crossing facilities for cyclists and pedestrians will also form part of the project.

The new route is one of 18 in South Gloucestershire to be included in the Cycling City project. Last year Bristol City and South Gloucestershire councils together succeeded in being chosen as Britain's first Cycling City.

Councillor Brian Allinson, South Gloucestershire's planning and transport chief, said the Frenchay-UWE route would link people's homes with where they worked, shopped, took part in leisure activities and went to school and college.

He said: "We hope that once the work is completed, we will have helped people to discover how easy it is to cycle. This will not only have health and cost benefits for those who cycle, but motorists should also benefit from less traffic congestion and safer roads."

“Not only is almost all of the SGlos provsion existing routes, it's to the lowest possible standard.

Whatever happened to the " we'll transform the infrastructure"?

They're ignoring the difficult stuff and just tacking a few existing routes together for "Cycling City"

This isn't what was promised or expected for such a high profile project.”

“Bongo, Cycling City have form on this.

They claimed the upgrade of the route through St Werburgh's as the creation of a "new" cycle route.

They are still claiming many miles of existing cycle routes as proposed "new" cycle routes, especially in the South Glos area.

They cannot wash their hands of what's reported by the Evening Post since it's based on their own publicity which continues to be misleading.”

“The road block that is the cycle way is not "new" as reported. This is actually an upgrade of an existing road block.”

“I think you'll find that it's the Evening Post who wrote that comment about it being a "new" route.”

“"existing cycle facilities will be upgraded"

So it's not a "new" cycle route then but an upgrade of an existing one.

A pity Cycling City can't just tell the truth and not hype everything up.”
