Bristol's Cabot Circus is "best in the world"
Cabot Circus in Bristol has been named the best shopping centre of the year - despite being open just two months.
An international panel of expert judges selected Bristol's new £500m retail centre from a shortlist of three leading shopping centres, including Forum Mersin in Turkey and Zlote Tarasy in Poland.
-
Judges for the MAPIC EG Retail Awards praised the "seamless integration" of Cabot Circus into Bristol and the impact that the 1.5 million sq ft development has had on the rest of the city since it opened in September.
They said Cabot Circus had "changed the entire city and for one shopping centre to do that is quite an achievement".
The architecture was also commended, with judges paying tribute to the mixture of styles.
Bob De Barr, project directorn of Bristol Alliance, which is behind Cabot Circus, said: "To win an international award of this calibre is a huge achievement and this is a very proud moment for the whole team.
"Cabot Circus has brought the range and quality of retail which this city has long deserved and Bristol can now take its rightful place as the regional shopping capital for the South West."
Bristol City Council leader Helen Holland said: "Cabot Circus is a stunning piece of design and landmark architecture connecting seamlessly with existing shopping areas.
"Cabot Circus has also created a wonderful city centre retail and leisure location of regional significance, which has quickly established itself as a fantastic draw and destination.
"Bristol has the most powerful city economy in the UK outside London and the success of Cabot Circus, especially in difficult global financial circumstances, is testament to the city's economic strength."

“Wow! So it's better than Forum Mersin in Turkey and Zlote Tarasy in Poland. Just think! Better than a couple of Second-World knockoffs of some grotty shopping mall in America. Woooo! We're the top!”

“I cant believe they got away with building it.
This isn't adding anything of value to Bristol and its not a competition of any value, its purely self congratulatory!”

“What's a brickbat?
And can you buy it in the CCC along with loads of other stuff no-one actually needs.”

“The inane have joined the insane to become urbane, take a bit of time off knocking, enjoy a little compliment once in a while.
Many Bristolians have never appreciated their City..”

“I agree. It's a brilliant shopping centre. the first time I visited I was impressed at the architecture - unlike anywhere I'd been before.
Seamless integration into Broadmead, and it's already started lifting the adjacent roads. The shop mix is superb, unlike the Cribbs mall which I find boring in the extreme.
Although I was suspicious about what we were getting at the start, this centre is a delight. Plenty of good eateries, a first rate cinema, courteous staff, super shops etc..
I understand those who are determined to chuck brickbats at the new shopping centre, but that says more about their need to throw brickbats than it does about the quality of our new city centre facility.”

“I am trying not to be suspicious that Cabot Circus has been awarded best shopping centre of the year after just two months of business. I am trying to be positive as awards for achievement are great for employee moral - however when I think of Cabot Circus, my thoughts are negative ones. I have been once and once was enough.”

“Right everyone, back to the story!
So lets look at the facts...
..Cheddar is Britain's largest gorge.
..Severn has the second highest tide on earth.
..At 988 metres, the Severn Bridge has the third longest span of any bridge in Great Britain.
..The Suspension Bridge accepted figure used for the total final cost in 1864 was almost £100,000 and yes a lady survived when she jumped off it and lived to the grand age of 84.
..The Bristol Old Vic is the longest continually used theatre in England.
..Bristol was reported by www dot forumforthefuture dot org as being the greenest city in England following extensive research but see the report for all the facts. Still we've done really well!
..Bristol central has one of possibly three of the best shopping centres in the world following another extensive study.
..Bristol Cribbs Causeway is the largest out of town shopping centre in the UK
Don't argue with facts. Alex you'll like this... sustrans started here and now there's more than 6500 miles of cycle paths throughout the UK and Bristol has won awards for being an example cycling city.
At a guess Bristol has the worst public transport service in the world!”

“Come my children! Flock to the great temple of consumerist trash and give praise to pointless material aspiration! Forget your souls, buy new shoes and be born again!

“This judgement is clearly rubbish. Where is the solid evidence, gathered over time? Seems like pure hype to me. Great for marketing - just like the the judgement that Bristol is worth shortlisting for European Green Capital or being the UK's greenest city!! None of this matches with good sense, common experience or sensible, honest assessment!”
