Cumberland Road in Bristol has today reopened.

The road had been closed after workmen discovered it was on the verge of collapse.

The road had to be closed on Sunday after a water main burst.

Workmen carrying out repairs discovered that the support underneath the tarmac on the road had eroded away.

The road was expected to reopen on Tuesday morning, but did not reopen until this afternoon.

Bristol Water said it was because the hole in the road is so big.

The whole width of Cumberland Road has had to be excavated, along a stretch of the road about 15ft long.

According to Bristol Water, no customers’ water supplies were affected by the burst main.

A spokesman for Bristol Water said the leak had been noticed when water started appearing on the road surface.

He said: “The pipe was fixed immediately, but work has had to be done to dig around it and fill the hole with gravel and rocks to repair the pipe’s support.

“Once it is all filled in and re-surfaced we do not foresee that there will be any other problems.”

He said that it was an isolated incident and that Bristol Water were not concerned about pipes anywhere else along the road.

Bus operator Wessex Connect have reported delays of up to 25 minutes on some of its services as a result of the traffic caused by the closure.

The 510 from Bedminster Down to Hotwells, the Park and Ride services from Avonmouth and Long Ashton and the UWE Link service, which usually run down Cumberland Road, are all still running but have had to be diverted.

“Cubist, Noting you comments about certain drivers, I take it bikes are being allowed through, and it's not another example of CYCLISTS thinking the road rules don't apply to them either!!!!!! ~ Ohhh! contraversial!”

“I was very late for work this morning.. the bedminster bridge roundabout in particular was heavily congested, it dosen't help when people block the route for others to shoot across when there lights turn green.. wastes everyones time.”

    “To RON: - - -

I think they think about what we think and that they think we can't think but only try to understand that we think about the Council think about. Think about thinking, perhaps it should be a new motto for the Bristol Council "Reputo super Reputo" (latin) - We could probably add some good old Shakespear to it "To think or not to think, about thinking"...!!!!”

“Did anyone else spot the irony of the diversion having to go over the Prince Street bridge - the one that our great leaders wish to make one way only for our "millions" of cyclists.”

“The road has been quiet today. The 500 and 510 are disrupted. The P+R / UWE buses don't use this road.

The exceptions are those car/van/lorry/taxi drivers that apparently can't read the 'Road Closed' signs...

I've seen loads of 3 point turns by motorists that are so arrogant that they really cannot believe that 'Road Closed' actually means that (even to them).

But hey, I'm on a bicycle and can get through, so I have to confess to a degree of my own built-in arrogance. :)”

“Since when did the P&R bus services ever run along Cumberland Road? Don't they use Hotwell Road?”
