A Bristol restaurant is taking part in the Street Smart fundraising campaign for the tenth year in a row.

Riverstation, on The Grove, was one of the first restaurants in Bristol to join the campaign where diners are asked to donate a pound to help the homeless.

It is one of 14 restaurants in the city taking part in this year's two-month appeal.

Yellow cards, with a message of support from Stephen Fry, are being placed on tables in participating restaurants urging diners to help the cause by adding £1 per table to their bills.

Riverstation used to run Street Smart solely in its upstairs restaurant but now includes its downstairs cafe and cocktail bar customers in the campaign.

Gary Golding, 29, manager at Riverstation, told the Evening Post they had noticed a big difference in the amount raised since the change.

He said: "We put the pound on bills automatically. Customers can either take it off or pledge more and often they do.

"A pound is nothing really is it? You can't even get yourself a coffee for that.

Last year, Riverstation made £1,900 and Mr Golding hopes to beat that figure this year.

He said: "You know that every pound you are handing over goes directly to help people locally which is fantastic."

StreetSmart runs throughout November and December.

Now in its 11th year, it is asking diners in 11 restaurants across the city to pay an extra £1 per table on their bills, to be donated to the homeless.

The campaign is running in 18 cities across the UK and expects around 600 restaurants nationwide to take part.

Last year Bristol Street Smart raised £8,000 for a number of charities and has raised around £85,000 since it began in 2000.

Money raised in Bristol will go directly to a number of charities in the city.

Last year, Bristol diners helped various organisations.

These included: Caring at Christmas, the One 25 project, the Cold Weather Group and the Rainbow Centre.

Bristol's StreetSmart organiser Bronwen Jones hopes the economic downturn won't stop people donating £1 when they dine out.

She said: "I'm hoping that, although it's a struggle for everybody, £1 is not too much to ask for.

"For a table of six it's really nothing, is it?"
