Bristol ranked 2nd in contest to become European Green Capital
BRISTOL has been ranked second overall in a contest to become the European Green Capital in 2014.
The city had been shortlisted for the award, together with Copenhagen and Frankfurt.

But now it has emerged that in a technical evaluation of the city, Bristol has been ranked second and winner in three key areas – climate, air quality and noise pollution.
The winner of the award will be announced in June.

The European Commission's experts have highlighted several achievements and aims for Bristol including:
â progress with action on climate change;
â plans to invest in transport and energy efficiency to reduce emissions further;
â improvements to road safety;
â importance of green business to the city and the improvements that businesses overall have made to their energy and carbon efficiency;
â reduction in waste during the past five years and recycling improvements;
â improvements to parks and open spaces and development of "brownfield" sites;
â the council's work to green its own operations and those of its contractors such as increasing the supply of local food in council catering.
â work done by local water companies in ensuring a secure, high quality supply of water and the investment being made to improve infrastructure to protect the environment.

“Why is this council so obsessed with being the best or first or whatever when it cannot get the basics right? For example (at least where I live) rubbish collection(yes BCC still waiting for cardboard waste bins to be emptied 3 weeks on), street sweeping, anti-social behaviour including street drinking and graffiti to say nothing of the appalling problem city-wide with public transport.”
